À propos
The Alaska Dreamer is a saltwater fish classified within the family Oneirodidae, a family of deep-sea anglerfishes commonly known as dreamers. Described scientifically as Oneirodes thompsoni, this species reaches a maximum recorded length of approximately 21 cm and a maximum weight of around 0.4 kg. It inhabits the deep mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones, with documented depth records ranging from 100 to 2,014 metres. Like other members of Oneirodidae, the Alaska Dreamer belongs to the ceratioid anglerfish group, in which females possess a bioluminescent lure, or esca, attached to a modified dorsal spine called the illicium. This glowing appendage is used to attract prey in the complete darkness of the deep ocean. The species is found in the deep waters of the North Pacific, where its extreme depth range encompasses a wide variety of temperature and pressure regimes. Ceratioid anglerfishes are among the most striking examples of adaptation to deep-sea life, with females being significantly larger than the highly reduced males. Oneirodes thompsoni likely feeds on small fish and crustaceans attracted to its bioluminescent lure. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature beyond its known occurrence in North Pacific deep waters.
