A compact marine anglerfish with vivid coloration ranging from red to yellow, characteristic of the Indo-Pacific frogfish family. Uses a modified dorsal spine as a lure to attract prey. Solitary and sedentary on coral reefs at 3-40m.

Coloration
Scarlet to orange-red body with white to pale pink patches and irregular darker red blotches; some individuals are pale pink to white; globular body with saddle-like dark marks and white-tipped illicium lure.

Wide Indo-Pacific distribution from the Red Sea, East Africa, and the Maldives east to the Tuamotu Archipelago and Hawaii. Occurs on coral reef slopes, lagoon floors, and rubble zones from the intertidal to 75 m depth.
