Aldrovandia rostrata is a saltwater halosaur of the family Halosauridae, inhabiting some of the deepest seafloor environments accessible to trawl surveys. This species has been recorded at depths of approximately 2,690 to 5,029 meters—placing it in the abyssal zone—and adults reach roughly 50.8 cm in length. Like other members of the genus, A. rostrata is elongate and eel-like, with a projecting snout and a body plan well suited to life close to the seafloor under extreme hydrostatic pressure. The specific epithet rostrata refers to the prominent rostrum characteristic of the halosaurid head. Halosaurs in the abyssal zone are among the deepest-living ray-finned fishes, feeding on invertebrates and detritus on abyssal plains. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature. Its conservation status has not been assessed. The biology and ecology of abyssal-living fishes remain among the least studied topics in marine ichthyology, making records from collection surveys particularly valuable.
