Alcock's narrowbody righteye flounder

<em>Poecilopsetta praelonga</em>, Alcock's Narrowbody Righteye Flounder, is a flatfish of the family Poecilopsettidae found in saltwater at depths of approximately 216 to 714 meters. Adults reach a maximum recorded length of about 17.5 cm. As a righteye flounder, <em>P. praelonga</em> lies on its left side with both eyes positioned on the right side of the body—an adaptation for a benthic lifestyle on sediment-covered seafloors. The genus <em>Poecilopsetta</em> is a relatively specialized group of deep-water flatfishes distributed across tropical and subtropical ocean floors. The specific epithet <em>praelonga</em> refers to the notably elongate body form, which is distinctive within the family. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature. This species likely feeds on small benthic invertebrates and organic matter settled on the substrate. Its conservation status has not been assessed. Deep-water flatfishes such as this one are infrequently encountered and much of their ecology remains poorly understood.
