The species known by the scientific name Coryphaenoides alateralis belongs to the family Macrouridae — the grenadiers or rattails — a highly successful family of deep-sea fishes characterised by their tapering, rat-like tails and large heads. This saltwater species is a bathypelagic or mesopelagic dweller, recorded at depths between approximately 1,035 and 1,116 metres, placing it firmly in the bathyal zone of the deep ocean. Adults reach a maximum recorded length of around 26.5 cm. Grenadiers in the genus Coryphaenoides typically inhabit continental slopes and abyssal plains, feeding on small fishes, crustaceans, and organic detritus. Their lateral-line systems and large eyes are adaptations for detecting prey and navigating in near-total darkness. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature. Conservation status for Coryphaenoides alateralis has not been formally evaluated at an international level.
