Rocky coastal and subtidal ground in the North Pacific is the habitat of Sebastes minor, a small rockfish known in Japan as akagaya. It reaches about 20 cm and occurs between roughly 3 and 100 metres. Like other members of the genus Sebastes, it combines a spiny, heavily armoured head with cryptic coloration that matches the rock and algal cover it shelters among.
