Sternopygus aequilabiatus

The <em>Sternopygus aequilabiatus</em> is a freshwater fish in the family Sternopygidae, the glass knifefishes — a group of weakly electric fishes native to South America. This species is among the larger representatives of its genus, attaining a maximum length of approximately 81 cm and a recorded maximum weight of around 1.5 kg, making it a substantial presence in its riverine habitat. Like all sternopygids, <em>Sternopygus aequilabiatus</em> generates continuous wave electric organ discharges, which it uses for electrolocation in turbid freshwater environments and for electrocommunication with conspecifics. The ribbon-like, elongated body form of glass knifefishes facilitates precise manoeuvring in structurally complex habitats such as submerged roots, leaf litter, and aquatic vegetation along river margins.
