<em>Loricariichthys acutus</em> is a freshwater armored catfish of the family Loricariidae, the largest family of catfishes in the world, native to South American river systems. This species can reach a maximum length of approximately 28 cm and a maximum weight of approximately 0.09 kg. Loricariid catfishes are distinguished by their heavily armored bodies covered in bony plates and their ventrally positioned suckermouth, which is used to rasp algae and biofilm from submerged surfaces. Members of the genus <em>Loricariichthys</em> typically inhabit the sandy and muddy bottoms of large lowland rivers and floodplain lakes in the Amazon and La Plata river basins. They are primarily algae and detritus feeders. Some loricariid species exhibit remarkable parental care behaviors.
