Cichlidae encompasses thousands of species distributed across Africa, the Americas, and parts of South Asia, with the African Great Lakes — particularly Lakes Tanganyika, Malawi, and Victoria — harboring exceptional levels of endemic cichlid diversity. <em>Greenwoodochromis abeelei</em> is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, one of the world's deepest and oldest freshwater lakes, located in the East African Rift Valley.
