Abstract

Instantly familiar from its vivid orange body and three black-edged white bands, the ocellaris clownfish lives exclusively among the tentacles of sea anemones on shallow Indo-Pacific reefs. A protective mucus coating shields it from the anemone's sting, a mutualism in which the fish gains refuge while the host gains cleaning and defence. All individuals hatch as males, and the dominant fish of a group transitions into the single breeding female, a protandrous sequence. Ranging from the Andaman Sea to the Philippines, Japan, and northwest Australia, it reaches only about eleven centimetres. A peaceful, hardy reef-aquarium staple, it is assessed as Least Concern and is now bred extensively in captivity.
