Alcalde

The Alcalde, known scientifically as <em>Crossoloricaria variegata</em>, is a freshwater armored catfish belonging to the family Loricariidae—one of the largest and most diverse catfish families in the world. Growing to approximately 26.5 cm in length, this slender loricariid is characterized by the bony plates covering its body, a trait common to the suckermouth armored catfishes. Members of this family are typically benthic, clinging to rocky or sandy substrates in flowing rivers with the help of their modified oral disc. <em>Crossoloricaria variegata</em> inhabits the freshwater systems of South America, where loricariids are a dominant component of riverine fish communities. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature. The species has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN for conservation status. Like most loricariids, it likely subsists on algae and detritus scraped from submerged surfaces. Its torpedo-shaped body and reduced fin profile suggest adaptation to moderate current conditions.
