نبذة

The Sailors Choice, Haemulon parra, is a robust grunt in the family Haemulidae that inhabits saltwater coral reef environments across the western Atlantic Ocean, from southern Florida and the Bahamas south through the Caribbean to northern South America. Typically found at depths between 3 and 30 metres, it seeks shelter among rocky outcroppings, reef ledges, and dense coral formations during daylight hours, venturing into sandy and grassy areas at night to forage. Adults reach a maximum recorded length of approximately 41.2 centimetres, making this one of the larger members of the grunt family. Like its relatives, Haemulon parra produces the characteristic grinding sound from its pharyngeal teeth that gives grunts their common name. The species is omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, crustaceans, and molluscs. It is commonly encountered in schools, particularly around prominent reef structures, and is a familiar sight to recreational divers throughout its range. The Sailors Choice is taken by artisanal and recreational fisheries across the Caribbean basin and is generally considered good table fare. Its conservation status has not been formally assessed by the IUCN, placing it in the Not Evaluated category.
