Lycenchelys albeola

The species <em>Lycenchelys albeola</em> is a saltwater member of the family Zoarcidae — the eelpouts — a family of elongate, eel-like fishes predominantly found in cold and deepwater marine environments. This species has been recorded at extraordinary depths, potentially reaching down to approximately 4,070 metres, placing it in the abyssal zone — among the deepest environments inhabited by vertebrates. Adults reach a maximum length of approximately 18.4 cm. Eelpouts in the genus <em>Lycenchelys</em> are benthic fishes adapted to the cold, high-pressure conditions of the deep sea, typically found on soft sediment substrates where they feed on small invertebrates and organic matter. Their elongate bodies and reduced scales are characteristic adaptations for burrowing and navigating soft-bottom habitats.
