نبذة
The Alaskan Lumpsucker is a small saltwater fish classified within the family Cyclopteridae, the lumpsuckers and snailfishes. Described scientifically as Eumicrotremus gyrinops, this species reaches a maximum recorded length of approximately 5.2 cm. It inhabits marine environments at depths ranging from 70 to 172 metres, occupying a lower-shelf benthic zone in cold North Pacific and Arctic waters. Cyclopterids are named for and distinguished by a thoracic suction disc formed from modified pelvic fins, which allows them to adhere firmly to hard substrates such as rocks, algae, and shell material. This adhesion is particularly important in the surge-prone and current-swept environments that many lumpsuckers occupy. Eumicrotremus gyrinops is a cold-water specialist found in the subarctic North Pacific, with its depth range suggesting a preference for the outer continental shelf. Lumpsuckers of the genus Eumicrotremus are characteristically rotund in body form, with a scaleless skin covered in bony tubercles arranged in longitudinal rows, lending them a bumpy texture. These fish feed on small invertebrates and zooplankton encountered on and near the seafloor. Details of habitat and range for this species remain limited in the ichthyological literature beyond its known North Pacific distribution. Reproductive biology and specific behavioral ecology for Eumicrotremus gyrinops are not extensively characterized.
